Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
