A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
