Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a statement.
Police report they were notified late on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Police then found multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state early analysis suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet informed of any physical harm in connection with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A high-ranking political figure stated the incident made him speechless and required to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the murder of nine people by a gunman targeting individuals of foreign heritage in 2020.
