An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: How a Person I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had planned a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side named International House. Setting down our luggage, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, found a table, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – close to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, more critically, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that after dark. The man from Iraq approached me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a place where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for three years. A perk of the job was that I also received free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a postgrad program in international relations.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the confidence or self-belief to reach out at an elite institution and seek a position. Moreover, I had long dreamed to take classes in another country, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a position in Switzerland where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
